The Green Smoothie

I challenge anyone to come up with a better green smoothie! In an effort to out-do my boyfriend's rather fantastic version, I have perfected my own magical green sludge. It's packed with everything nutritious and uplifting, which is much appreciated during school's exam season. I drink one every morning, followed by a few cups of water. It doubles as a phenomenal meal-replacement too, if work leaves me pinched for time. One of these per day, for two months, and I can report how much whiter my eyes have become, along with stronger nails, softer skin (even in the dead of winter), etc. ...Of course, green smoothies work in combination with a clean diet, and natural moisturizers like coconut oil. They are definitely an acquired taste - and might as well be made in a bubbling cauldron because they're one ingredient short of "eye of goat" - but super yummy once you get into the routine.

So, here's my ingredient list. Quantities vary, and depending on how I'm feeling that day (needing more or less carbohydrates or fat), I might omit the dates or avocado. Add more ice or water to achieve a slushy or juice version. If you want to get clever about it, you can pre-mix and refrigerate all of the dry ingredients, in a huge batch, to avoid scooping 10 little things each morning.

  • 1 very ripe frozen banana
  • huge handful of spinach
  • huge handful of kale (try to leave out the stems because they'll make it woody) 
  • 3-5 dates 
  • 1 scoop vegan protein powder 
  • 1 tbls wheat-grass powder 
  • 2 tsp spirulina 
  • 2 tbs liquid chlorophyll 
  • 2 tbls soaked chia seeds (turned into a gel) 
  • 1 tbs dry psyllium husk 
  • 1/2 tbls ground flax seeds
  • 1/2 tbls hemp seeds 
  • 1/2 tbls bee pollen 
  • 1 vitamin D supplement
  • 1 pinch or capsule of reishi mushroom extract 
  • water or almond milk (make sure it's without carrageenan) 
  • ice 
    • Blend everything for a LONG time. SUPER LONG. 
  • 1/4 ripe avocado 
    • Add the fat only once it looks ready to drink. Treat it like melting butter into ready mashed-potatoes. Maintain the integrity of the avocado!!! If you add it any sooner, its precious ability to make your smoothie silky and luscious will be lost in a muddle of froth.
